{July 16, 2007}   Behind The Music

Music has always been the biggest influence in my life. Growing up with songs from the days of when Sam Cooke was being played on the vinyls to the latest songs blasting through stereos all the way to the top of today’s billboard charts, inspired me to be a part of the vast, growing music industry. However, during my early teenage years, my dreams were hit by the reality that I didn’t have the talent to sing or even the patience to learn to play any musical instruments. People tend to think the music industry is all and only about the lyrics, the melody and most of all, the performers but behind all the glitz and glamour of every head bopping and sappy tunes and their lyrics that has toped the billboard charts, stands a brilliant mind and his associates of where the art of business comes alive.

For those who has no clue to what i’m talking about, a music entrepreneur is a person who coordinates, operates, markets and assumes the risk for a music business venture. Most businesses started by music entrepreneurs, just to name a few, are: Recording Studio Facility, Booking Agency, Artist Management, Music Retail, Music Publishing Company, Record Label, etc. These are the people who are also earning big bucks! This is the reason to why Simon Cowell became so famous without even humming to a tune. There are also musicians these days who manages and market their own music. This will be only for a short period of time until they are signed to a major Record Label. However, in a small country like Malaysia, managing and marketing your own music could be possible on a long run because all you need is excellent business knowledge and skills!

I agree wholeheartedly with your post! Oftentimes people do forget the driving force behind all the successful artists out there.. If a person has musical talent but is mismanaged, or is perhaps under bad management, he or she would never get the exposure he or she deserves. That is probably the reason why a lot of talented singers do not make it out there, or if they do, they only last for a while. While in comparison, artists who (arguably) may not have the best voice seems to be selling millions of records. So, yes, the people behind the music are a very important factor indeed!

Bon O says:

Maybe that is why singers like Britney Spears are still around… She has got great producers who help make the best of what she has to offer. Plus she is on a popular record label who spends millions on advertising her album and her songs!

music is what the pleases one ears n every single individual proclaims great music in their own way.most geniuses of the line of music comes from a background of a musical surrounding tat might be different between different areas n history.well talking bout malaysian music industry in terms of growing it might be a good market but tat pays for nothing if the government doesn’t play its part or even start budging in everytime they ASSUME tat a song is explicit(i understand if its this) but they do seem to assume tat every single tune tat comes out has a hidden meaning tat teaches so called explicit stuff, do they think people are tat dumb found? With government backing n not interuption i believe there is a future for malaysian music to grow not only locally by world wide.

Ying says:

That is true to a certain extent, however the growth of music entrepreneurs here in Malaysia is sadly stunted compared to other countries. Even the growth for musical artists here is slow, probably cause there are only a few prominent artists out there. The good producers and music people are already managing singers like Siti.. there are so few producers out there simply because there isn’t much demand. What about all those underground artists? They do not have fancy producers. That’s why they have to have all those rock gigs all over to get exposed. Most of them are not even signed by record labels. But those who do get signed eventually do become more popular. It is just so hard to break into the music industry here.

in Other words,…if u wana b famous…dun Try Malaysians music indUstry..haha..

yearpz im with ya ms.behave. its better not to try the Malaysia music industry

Joan says:

The Malaysian music industry has a lot to work on.I believe we have great singers but if they want to take it to a different level, internationally that is,they need to produce songs that are at par at least if not better. We have so many traditional styles to play with but it is hardly taken on which is very sad.So, to answer your question, producers are as equally important as the managers.

Catherine says:

Somehow..i believe that eventhough a person MAY have one of the best masterminds in this music industry, HOWEVER, if he/she does not have any talent at all, their future is for a short period of time. Thus, comes along the term..ONE-HIT-WONDERS! Example.. Paris Hilton… she can afford the best from her manager..to her producers..ESPECIALLY her publicists! but without much talent.. her career in this industry is bleak! and her album sales FLOPPED! Basically.. entertainers are still nothing w/o talent no matter how they’re managed!

Joshi says:

what you have said is correct to an extent but at the same time there is an options like b2b business so though you are working from Malaysia your music can be launched globally via e-commerce business.
